Round 2 of John's Tour of Texas. This show was not only the last show of the first leg of John's Summer Tour 2008 but also the last show with Brett Dennen and Colbie Caillat as openers.
I didn't know much about Colbie Caillat other than the two singles she has working radio right now. Realize and Bubbly. After seeing her two nights I am somewhat on the fence about her. She's a good looking girl with a nice voice and some catchy tunes but is very unpolished as an entertainer. She didn't look real comfortable on stage. One of her covers, the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" was fun but it didn't make me want to shake my ass too much as that song should. During her current single Realize she brought out John to sing with her. Nice job. As a practical joke (last tour date together) her band went into a very abbreviated Wonderland. John hammed it up and fun was had. Glad she did that so we wouldn't have to hear it in John's set.
L-83 didn't hook us up in the 2nd row like in Dallas but instead we were on row Z next to the FOH board. What at first seemed like bummer seats actually turned out good. The seats in front of us belonged to Coors. The folks in those corporate seats kept passing back 24oz cans of Coors all show. No better beer than free beer!
Another night of John playing without a shirt and girls and mostly women getting hot and bothered. Now to be fair there wer a good bit of repeats fro Dallas. So let me talk of some of the highlights (other than free beer).
Wheel. One of my favorites. Lots of room for some exploration and a healthy dose of crowd interaction. This is a tune than shines extra bright for some reason when he plays it in Houston. In this version towards the end he sings a few bars of Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For from U2. Good stuff!
Stitched Up is a song that John guested on for Herbie Hancock's album Possibilities. Tight, tight song with a really infectious jazz groove. This is one of those adult John Mayer songs. No spit, no sparkle just good musicianship. Excited to hear how this one develops in a live setting.
Gravity brought Colbie out as a surprise guest. She sound good although she had a hard time reading the lyrics off the teleprompter.
Taping was 100% problem free. Nice folks around us very tolerant of the taping gear.
